CLIL (What is CLIL?)

CLIL is an acronym that stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning. It is a generic term used to mean integrated learning that combines content learning (e.g. subjects and themes) with language learning (e.g. English). CLIL is gradually becoming familiar to teachers and learners in Japan.CLIL Institute for Teacher Education (CLIL-ITE) provides the CTEP for people who are interested in CLIL pedagogy. If you want to teach CLIL or learn CLIL teaching, why not join this program? The CTEP is a bilingual teacher education program and easy to access.

Curriculum

The CTEP curriculum is composed of 6 modules. Each module contains 10 courses including a 30-minute video lecture and additional tutorial time by a tutor. When finishing one module, you need to attend the in-person intensive 2-or-3-day workshop held in urban areas such as Tokyo, Osaka or Sendai during holidays.

Module 1: CLIL teaching methodology
Module 2: CLIL lesson study
Module 3: CLIL classroom management
Module 4: CLIL classroom activities
Module 5: CLIL classroom language use
Module 6: ELT and CLIL pedagogy

There are 6 textbooks for each module. Each textbook contains basic CLIL theories and practices which are all necessary for you to be a CLIL practitioner, based on the curriculum guidelines. You need to learn CLIL by yourself while watching the video lectures and asking the tutors who support your learning.

Accreditation

If you complete each module, you will earn the certificate of completion of one module, and if you complete all the 6 modules, you will receive the CLIL teacher certificate accredited by J-CLIL (the Japan CLIL Pedagogy Association). The CLIL teacher certificate demonstrates that you can teach CLIL but does not guarantee that you are a professional CLIL practitioner. Moreover, it is not an official certificate, but it certainly assures that you can say, for example, 'I am a CLIL teacher, and I can use CLIL approaches in my classroom.'  After completion, we assure you will be able to teach CLIL with confidence.

Learning process

As this above diagram shows, you will be qualified as a candidate for the J-CLIL accredited CLIL teacher by completing all the 6 modules, in which you will also need to participate 6 workshops and submit 6 reflection papers after attending the necessary courses in each module. After finishing all the learning process, the committee comprising some CLIL practitioners and tutors who are selected from among J-CLIL members assess whether or not the candidate is qualified as a CLIL teacher. After the assessment by the committee, CLIL-ITE makes a recommendation for the candidate as a J-CLIL accredited CLIL teacher to J-CLIL, which then issues the certificate of completion of CTEP. Finally, the candidate can become a J-CLIL accredited CLIL teacher.

Online learning courses

Based on the 6 modules, you can learn CLIL through online video lectures. Each module has some online video lectures (plus some ad-hoc programs), each of which includes some professional CLIL topics. Each video lecture has about 30-minute video program, using English and Japanse. English is the main instruction language, but Japanese is also used in many video lectures. They are all related to textbook contents, but they are not the same. Online videos are the lectures based on the textbook topics. You need to read the textbook as well as watching the video lecture. The point is that you think about CLIL while reading the textbook and the video and discuss CLIL pedagogy.
